Pastor Matthew Trewhella
The John Birch Society
Pastor Matthew Trewhella serves as pastor of Mercy Seat Christian Church near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and is a member of the National Council of The John Birch Society. He graduated with honors from Valley Forge Christian College in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science in Theology. He and his wife, Clara, married in 1981 and have 11 children and 41 grandchildren, including two great-grandchildren.
Pastor Trewhella has lectured at hundreds of Christian and political gatherings and appeared on numerous radio and television programs. He has also addressed 11 state legislatures and spoken to sheriffs, attorneys general, lieutenant governors, and governors.
He is the author of The Doctrine of the Lesser Magistrates: A Proper Resistance to Tyranny and a Repudiation of Unlimited Obedience to Civil Government, which has sold more than 150,000 copies. He also published the first English translation of the 1550 Magdeburg Confession, an early formulation of the lesser magistrate doctrine.
In 1990, Pastor Trewhella founded Missionaries to the Preborn. He also created the Tell the Truth Tours and Campus Town Tours. His pro-life activism has included nonviolent demonstrations at abortion clinics, for which he has spent 15 months in American jails. Pastor Trewhella has been a member of the JBS since 2015.
