Members of the Illinois General Assembly are seeking to pass tyrannical legislation that would massively increase government restrictions on homeschooling.
House Bill 2827 (HB 2827) is sponsored by Representatives Terra Costa Howard (D-Lombard), Michelle Mussman (D-Schaumburg), and Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago). If enacted, it would expand government restrictions on homeschooling. For example, it would:
- Require homeschooling parents to file a “Homeschool Declaration Form,” requiring them to hand over private information about themselves and their children to the government.
- Allow school districts to require homeschooling families to submit an “educational portfolio,” which the district could approve and reject — thus allowing the government to directly control what parents teach their children.
- Effectively require homeschooled children to comply with all medical or vaccination requirements of a school district if they participate in any activity in a public school.
HB 2827 would dangerously entangle government in parental rights, setting the foundation for restrictions on parents’ ability to freely homeschool their children.
HB 2827 and the push for Illinois-government oversight of homeschooling is not surprising. Although homeschooling has grown significantly in popularity, leftists and anti-Christians, upset at their weakening stranglehold over children’s education, are seeking to tightly regulate and even outright ban it. For example, Harvard Law School had planned an anti-homeschooling summit in 2020, while far-left teachers unions are campaigning against it. Meanwhile, homeschooling is heavily regulated or banned outright in many countries worldwide; multiple homeschooling families have had to flee their countries to avoid persecution.
Even today in Maryland, there is an unacceptable level of government interference — already, homeschooling families must be supervised by either their local board of education or a private educational institution. In addition to defeating HB 2827, state legislators must repeal every existing form of government regulation of homeschooling.
Accordingly, tell your state legislators to oppose HB 2827 and to completely remove the government from homeschooling and other forms of education.
Although we provide a way to easily email legislators, we know from long experience that it takes a lot more interaction with your legislators to get your point across than that provided by emails alone.
That's why we provide an easy way not only to email them, but to contact them by phone, tweet, and even video message them.
