First Executive Order May Reverse Abortion Policy PDF  | Print |  E-mail

“Obama raises hand, lifts a nation,” the headline of a CNN online story read. Lifting a nation — would that include protecting the unborn?

Barack ObamaFor those individuals who continue to respect and defend the most valuable gift ever given, that of life itself, the foreboding one felt in the pit of one’s stomach on inauguration day is already proving prophetic.

CNN reported on Tuesday that three Democratic sources indicate President Obama will issue his first executive order to reverse the Mexico City Policy that prohibits U.S. money from funding international family planning groups that promote abortion or provide information, counseling or referrals about abortion services. “There’s a lot that the president can do using his executive authority without waiting for congressional action, and I think we’ll see the president do that,” John Podesta, head of Obama’s transition team, said when he appeared on “Fox News Sunday,” last November.

So, the 44th President may use the 36th anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision which falls on his second full day in office to send a clear message — that he intends to keep at least one campaign promise — that of promoting abortion, the murder of babies still in the womb.

President Ronald Reagan created the plan that banned taxpayer funds from being used to promote abortions in 1984. It was continued by the first President Bush for the length of his presidency. President Clinton lifted the ban in 1993, and President Bush reinstated the pro-life policy in 2001, on January 22. Critics of President Bush’s action in the matter referred to it as a “legislative ambush,” at the time.

On January 16 of this year, a bipartisan group of 77 congressmen wrote a letter to the Obama Transition team urging the president-elect to continue the Mexico City Policy, “which separates abortion and family planning in America's foreign aid programs.”

Currently over 650 organizations receive funding under the Mexico City Policy restrictions. International Planned Parenthood and Maria Stopes International refuse to abide by the restrictions and therefore do not receive funding. If the President reversed the restrictions, however, these two organizations would likely receive funding once intended for the 650 organizations who do not promote abortion in any way as a means of family planning.

Two other areas of concern to pro-lifers might also be targeted early on by President Obama. The first would be that of the ban on embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) funding. Presently, the law prohibits federal funds for the creation of human embryos for research, as well as experimentation that destroys or threatens the health or life of embryos. It’s called the Dickey Amendment and has stood since 1996. If President Obama uses an executive order to circumvent that ban, at least a court battle might be waged to protect human embryos.

The second area of concern would be that of funding the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). Currently the Kemp-Kasten Amendment has been invoked to prohibit congressionally-approved funds from going to the UNFPA based on the agency's support of China's coercive, population-control program. The 1985 Kemp-Kasten Amendment prohibits family planning money from going to any entity that, as decided by the president, "supports or participates in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization." President Obama would need help from Congress on this one, but they could easily approve the passage of funds to UNFPA early this year.

This is indeed "change" — but a horrid kind that sees the global promotion of abortion.

Sad Day
For all the hoopla yesterday, it was a sad day for pro-life individuals. I hope Obama won't push abortion, but I know his record.

Too many Christians voted for a candidate that believes in killing the unborn child.

RE: Promises made to Mark Mix of National Right To Work Committee and Wanda Franz of Right To Life Committee
As my late father was right about socialism and communism being violations of God's will and order, I promised Mark Mix and Wanda Franz that I will fight Barack Obama and his Democrat Party on the issues of labor and abortion-euthanasia. It so happened that both the Communist Party, USA and the Socialist Party, USA endorsed Obama and Biden as well as the UN people. Barry M. Goldwater, Sr. is in heaven, Reagan is in heaven, and my parents are in heaven. Those who ignore or thwart God's Will have no chance of entering His Kingdom when his or her life ends. As my late mother said about the loss of her beloved husband - It is not my will that shalt be done but thine will shalt be done meaning it is God's Will not her will that is done. I am a patriot who does not trust government and the Democrats in power. BGen Peter F. Steele, USMC [Ret] for the late RADM Peter Steele, USN.

liberty, justice, and repentance for all
President Obama's Inaugural statement, "But the decision to nuture a child also decides our fate" was, like the word "Change" prophetic, put in his mouth as a true word. If he twists this by acting against it, he will likewise face his Judge.

While I agree that it is wickedness in high places to allow (let alone promote or even fund) the killing of children, I am solemnly reminded that if there is not voluntary obedience to bearing children unto God, our nation will see a fierce judgment from God. Thankfully, if greater judgment than we have so far seen becomes necessary, it will be additional opportunity for our repentance at allowing the bloodshed to continue, and to repent of making an idol of government as if it was up to "them" to do something.

Sameness
There seems to be a general longing of the liberals to make the United States the same as the rest of the world. Do they really think a move like this will bolster foreign policy? Make us seem more open. More open to attack maybe. If another civil war is fought in this country, it will be fought over abortion. Already in his first week, president Obama is making career mistakes. Dealing with un-fixable solutions to the cosmic riddle of abortion just says that he really is naive. Wow.
