Under Obama You Will Serve

Obama and McCain have unveiled the details of their national service campaign plans. While McCain sees it as a moral issue, Obama, whose plan is highly socialistic in nature, sees it as a governing mission.

Senators Obama and McCainBy far, Obama’s plan is much more frightening just looking at the explicitness of its details. But McCain is willing to throw millions of dollars into a project that demands “voluntary” service as well and offers a civilian rat-on-your-neighbor force to help “fight terrorism.” (Who needs the Gestapo or the SS?)

The Wall Street Journal’s Shikha Dalmia sorted through the information on Obama’s website concerning his national service plan, tucked inside his 10-page vision statement, and offers excellent analysis.

For starters, Obama’s ominously named “Plan for Universal and Voluntary Citizen Service” involves middle-school and high-school students “volunteering” 50 hours of public service per year in order to graduate — thereby making it less than voluntary. For college students he’s offering $40 per hour job for 100 hours of service. The Obama campaign says it will only cost $10 billion, so not to worry.

Older Americans are not to be left out. Those elderly who voluntarily perform civic service will have “additional income security, including assistance with retirement and family-related costs, and continuation of health-care coverage,”  which amounts to a bribe, really.

Americans are already donating $300 billion a year to various charities out of their own pockets — the highest of any nation in the world. Americans are also generous with their time, with 8.1 billion hours of service donated to community organizations, so forcing them to participate in more serving of the nation must have another agenda.

Obama’s vision sees the doubling of the size of the Peace Corp, a Classroom Corp to invade the schools, a Health Corp to oversee the health of those in “under served” areas, a Clean Energy Corp to make sure we’re all going “green,” and a Global Energy Corps that will poke the government’s nose into developing countries’ energy plans to make sure they go low-carbon.

Dalmia has it right when he asserts that Obama wants collective political action. He would wrest resources from those who have them and give them to those who don’t, by government mandate. Obama would forsake independence and self-reliance for more welfare, continuing and expanding the government’s hand in the lives of every citizen.

Obama believes in mandated/imposed social justice; he doesn’t believe in the “individualistic bootstrap” idea, calling it a myth. So, that makes him.... what?

There is a word for it: "socialist."
