... Cathy, you're surely correct in your views on Mr. Obama's message. There's no delegation in the Constitution of a power for the federal government to move into the business of operating organizations to involve people in voluntary work for charity's sake. It's not voluntary once government gets involved and starts mandating who will work where, how long, for what reward or if not involved for what punishment. Socialists get so enamored with the prospect of regimenting the lives of others for the accomplishment of big projects that the concepts of freedom, of consentual contracts between individuals, of true charity get trampled under regimentations demands. |

I respectfully disagree Hi, Cathy! Thanks for your fine post. I got the same e-mail from the President and First Lady that you did. I listened to Michelle Obama's video appeal that was embedded in the message. I found nothing in the letter or the video that seemed improper to me. In fact, I feel that calling patriotic Americans to service was a very positive thing to do, perhaps the best thing he has done as president so far. Although my brother and I are very busy providing round-the-clock care to my aged, bed-ridden mother, I am investigating to see if I can participate in some small way. I feel that many patriots have an unfair, knee-jerk reaction to President Obama. He is just another CFR politician, no worse than George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, etc. He has stepped onto the presidential stage at a watershed moment in history, perhaps the most critical time since FDR did his thing; but that was just the luck of the draw as far as Obama was concerned. He had no way to know the financial sector was going to melt down in September 2008. Yes, Obama has exploited the crisis, just as G.W. Bush exploited the 9-11 bombings to get his agenda accomplished. I can't say I really approve of bailing out the same Wall Street banksters who ran our economy over a cliff. But I do support the president's call on Americans to serve their communities. I feel that patriots should be the first to answer such a call, even from Barack Obama. Cathy, do you think you would feel the same way if it were Ronald Reagan calling on Americans to serve? |

Volunteering is not a mandate A personal appeal (whether form lettered or not) is not a mandate nor compulsory, therefore should be seen in the light of any other invitation, you are free to accept or reject. Ascribing a suggestion of voluntary service to be the same as a mandated service amounts to the same spin doctoring that we abhor. |
